Community pharmacists are our real-life, local superheroes. Each one brings a unique set of superpowers—from clinical expertise to deep community connection. But their most powerful gift? Unwavering patient care.
While all pharmacists play a vital role in supporting patients on their health journey, community pharmacists are uniquely positioned to deliver personalized, high-quality care.
Independent pharmacies often serve as the first—and sometimes only—touchpoint for patients in need. In fact, a Consumer Reports survey found that more than half of patients at independent pharmacies are known by name, compared to just 14% at large retail chains. That personal connection is a cornerstone of trust and better outcomes.
Many of our pharmacy partners have cared for generations of families, from grandparents to great grandbabies. In a healthcare landscape where quality care can be hard to come by, patients stay loyal to the providers who truly know them.
We recently sat down with Christy Vu of Horsham Pharmacy, to talk about her unwavering commitment to patient care and how her team launches new programs, like RedSail Technologies RxCash+, to support patients while growing the business.
After almost 15 years as a pharmacist working in a corporate setting, Christy Vu was ready for a new challenge. Above all other aspects of pharmacy life, Vu loved patient-oriented care and wanted to be where the people were.
Years later, it’s still her favorite part of the job. “I really love to stand out there and talk to our customers,” said Vu. Alongside her husband, Vu opened Horsham Pharmacy in Horsham, Pennsylvania in 2019, just a year before COVID hit. When Horsham Pharmacy opened, Vu knew providing patient care meant prioritizing clinical services, including vaccines. So when the COVID vaccine was finally available, Horsham Pharmacy’s patients knew where to go. In fact, Horsham was the first pharmacy in their surrounding are to receive the COVID vaccine, the first day any store was able to receive them.
“Our website crashed. Our phone rang off the hook for three days,” Vu recalled. “We were giving shot after shot every day.”
Despite the chaos, Vu and her team focused on what mattered most: getting vaccines to the people who needed them. “We had no idea how to bill insurance,” she says. “We just knew how to administer the shot and fill out the consent form. We figured out the rest later.”
Even after the pandemic surge, Vu continued to expand clinical services based on patient needs. “I offer diabetes education—anything people ask for, I’m willing to do. Whether it’s billable or not, I figure it out as I go.”
When it came to cash-paying patients, Vu initially partnered with a third-party discount card provider. But the pricing model didn’t sit right with her.
“We’re serving people who don’t have insurance or have high-deductible plans they’ll never meet,” Vu explained. “I’d bite the bullet if the medication was underpriced—these are people who really need help. But with the old program, we were losing money. It didn’t make sense.”
As a PioneerRx customer, Vu discovered RxCash+, a RedSail Technologies solution designed to help independent pharmacies offer competitive cash pricing.
Vu likes to put new potential programs through a testing period to ensure it has a positive impact on patients and the pharmacy overall. This way, she’s able to gather patient feedback, get a feel for the new process or tech solution, and monitor results. Vu’s testing system allows her to build trust amongst the patient population, implementing programs that are beneficial for her patients and the pharmacy alike.
For RxCash+, Vu tested the program for about 3 months, utilizing the RxCash+ bin just 30% of the time. “I didn’t lose anyone, and my customers are still very, very happy with the pricing,” she said.
Now, Vu utilizes the RxCash+ bin over 80% of the time with her cash patients. “If I knew earlier, I would have done it earlier.”
Since launching RxCash+ in September 2024, Horsham Pharmacy has seen an average increase of $250/month across 55 cash prescriptions. Vu especially values the program’s customization features, which allow her to adjust pricing based on what her patients can afford.
“RxCash+ gives me a lot more flexibility,” Vu said. “With the other program, I had no say in pricing. It was either use it or don’t. Now, I can make decisions that work for my patients and my business.”
